The national language is Dzongkha, ‘the language spoken in dzongs’, which was formerly only an oral language, the written language being Choekey, the classical Tibetan. Dzongkha has been a written language for the last few decades or so only, and the Royal Government has made great efforts to standardize it, and encourage its use.
